Removing a solid state drive mounting sleeve

Use this information to remove an optional solid state drive mounting sleeve.

The solid state drive mounting sleeve is required to install optional 1.8-inch hot-swap solid-state drives (SSDs). Each mounting sleeve can hold up to two 1.8-inch hot-swap SSDs. When solid state drive mounting sleeves are used, two sleeves are installed in the compute node.

Before you remove a solid state drive mounting sleeve, complete the following steps:

  1. Read Safety and Installation guidelines.
  2. If the Lenovo Flex System x240 M5 compute node is installed in a chassis, remove it (see Removing a compute node from a chassis for instructions).
  3. Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with the bezel pointing toward the left.
Note: There are two solid state drive mounting sleeves. The upper solid state drive mounting sleeve must be removed first.

To remove the solid state drive mounting sleeves, complete the following steps.

  1. Remove the compute node cover (see Removing the compute node cover).
  2. Locate the solid state drive mounting sleeves on the compute node.

  3. Remove the solid state drive bay cover.
  4. Remove any SSD disk drives (see Removing a 1.8-inch solid state drive).
  5. Press the tab at the front right side of the upper SSD mounting sleeve; then, press the top rear of the upper solid state drive mounting sleeve froward, slide it away from the compute node, and remove the sleeve from the bay.
Note: Use your finger nail or a flat-blade screwdriver to press the tab at the front right side of the SSD mounting sleeve. It might be easier to press the tab if the bezel is removed.
  6. Press the tab at the front right side of the lower SSD mounting sleeve; then, press the top rear of the lower solid state drive mounting sleeve froward, slide it away from the compute node, and remove the sleeve from the bay.
Important: Do not pry against the hard disk drive backplane or its connectors when sliding the lower SSD mounting sleeve forward.

If you are instructed to return a solid state drive mounting sleeve, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

If you are no longer planning to install SSD disk drives in the compute node, replace the hard disk drive backplane and compute node bezel, and hard disk drives or fillers with the components that were originally installed in the compute node. For information about replacing the hard disk drive backplane, see Removing a hard disk drive backplane and Installing a hard disk drive backplane. For information about replacing the compute node bezel, see Removing the bezel and Installing the bezel.
