Removing the base assembly

Use this information to remove the base assembly.

Before you begin

Notes:
  1. This procedure should be performed only by trained service technicians.
  2. The base assembly includes the chassis and system board.
Before you remove the base assembly, complete the following steps:
  1. Read Safety and Installation guidelines.
  2. If the compute node is installed in an Flex System chassis, remove it (see Removing a compute node from a chassis for instructions).
  3. Carefully lay the compute node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the compute node with the bezel pointing toward you.
  4. Obtain the following items for use during the replacement procedure (see Parts listing, Types 7917, 7167, 2590 and 2584):
    • Alcohol wipes
    • Thermal grease
    • RFID tag (required only if the compute node came with a RFID tag attached to the bezel)

About this task

Important: When you replace the base assembly, you must update the compute node with the latest firmware or restore the preexisting firmware. Make sure that you have the latest firmware or a copy of the preexisting firmware before you proceed. See Updating firmware and device drivers for more information.

See System-board layouts for more information about the locations of the connectors, jumpers, and LEDs on the system board.

Procedure

To remove the components from the base assembly, complete the following steps:

base assembly

  1. Remove the cover (see Removing the compute node cover).
  2. Remove all of the installed components in the following list from the base assembly; then, place them on a static-protective surface or install them on the new base assembly.
  3. If you are replacing the old base assembly with a new base assembly, carefully remove the bezel from the old base assembly and install it on the new base assembly (see Removing the bezel and Installing the bezel). If the old bezel will not attach securely to the new base assembly, remove the Tag from the lower right corner of the old bezel and install it on the lower right corner of the new bezel that shipped with the new base assembly; then, install the new bezel on the new base assembly.

What to do next

If you are instructed to return the base assembly, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
