Replacing IBM Flex Systems FC5022 Switch I/O Module

This procedure disrupts communication on the storage area network (SAN) fabric for all devices attached to the FC5022 switch that is being replaced. Ensure that you take preventive steps in the affected environment to mitigate the effects of this disruption.

About this task

Perform the following tasks to replace the IBM® Flex System Manager management software FC5022 Switch I/O Module:

Procedure

  1. Use the configUpload command to save a backup of the current switch configuration to a file. For information on how to back up the configuration, see the Fabric OS Command Reference Guide.
Note: If feature licenses exist on the switch that is being replaced, acquire and install new activation key files based on the serial number of the replacement unit. If the replacement is handled through IBM Service and Support, your original authorization Code is transferred to the serial number of the replacement unit. Contact IBM Features On Demand license key support, by sending an email to: FOD@us.ibm.com to request activation keys for the replacement unit.
  2. In the IBM Flex System Manager management software Web User Interface, remove the Switch Managed End Point (MEP) that is associated with the switch I/O module that is being replaced. To remove the MEP:
    1. Right click the switch MEP.
    2. Select Remove.
  3. Remove and store any existing cables and SFP transceivers from the switch module for use in the replacement switch. Skip this step if you are going to replace the cables and SFPs.
  4. Replace the existing FC5022 switch I/O module with the new I/O module. For information on how to replace the existing FC5022 switch, see the "IBM Flex System® FC5022 16Gb SANScalable Switch User's Guide," "Removing or replacing the switch" section.
  5. Configure the Network address by using the Chassis Management Module (CMM). For information on how to configure the network address, see "Configuring IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis components."
  6. Use the configDownload command to import the previous switch configuration file to the current switch. For information on how to import the configuration file, see the Fabric OS Command Reference Guide. If a backup file is not available, refer to the Fabric OS Administrator Guide for further information on how to configure the switch.
  7. Discover the replacement switch module by running an IBM Flex System Manager management software Inventory task against the CMM. To discover the replacement switch module, complete the following tasks:
    1. Log in to the IBM Flex System Manager management software Web User Interface.
    2. Right click the System Chassis MEP of the chassis that contains the replacement switch.
    3. Select InventoryCollect Inventory from the menu.
    4. Select Run now and click OK in the Launch Job window. This action starts a chain of inventory jobs that begin with a single Collect Inventory job for the CMM in the chassis. When this action is complete, a number of other inventory jobs are automatically created based on the information that is obtained from the CMM inventory.
Note: Complete all the additional inventory jobs before you continue with the next step. To monitor these jobs in the IBM Flex System Manager management software Web User Interface, go to the Home tab and select the Plug-ins subtab. Under the Automation Manager plug-in section, click the Active and Scheduled Jobs link. The Active and Scheduled Jobs pane is started from where all the inventory jobs can be monitored. Further information about inventory with the IBM Flex System Manager management software is in Discovering systems and collecting inventory data.
  8. A Switch MEP for the replacement switch now appears in the IBM Flex System Manager management software Web User Interface. If the switch does not appear, manually discover it by using the SNMP protocol. Information on how to discover the replacement switch as a Switch MEP are in Section 3 of technote 618408331, A Switch is Not Discovered as a Switch in IBM Systems Director Due to Incorrect SNMP Credential Used.
  9. The new Switch MEP is in an OK access state.
  10. Perform a full FSM inventory on the replacement switch. To complete the full inventory by using the IBM Flex System Manager management software Web User Interface,
    1. Right click the Switch MEP for the replacement switch.
    2. Select InventoryCollect Inventory.
    3. Select Run now and click OK in the Launch Job window. The replacement switch is ready for use when the Inventory job completes successfully.
  11. For VMControl and Storage Control to work with the FC5022 16Gb SAN switch, start the SMIA Configuration Tool application so that the management software can access the required SMI-S agent for the FC5022 switch. For further information see Discovering an IBM Flex System FC5022 16Gb SAN switch with the SMIA Configuration Tool.
