Managing and configuring the IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node

Use this information as a starting point for setting up a IBM® Flex System V7000 Storage Node configuration with the IBM Flex System Manager management software.

After a IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node is installed in a Flex System Enterprise Chassis, the management software discovers the Flex System V7000 and collects inventory automatically.
Important: When the management software discovers and manages a Flex System V7000, the management software overwrites the preexisting SSH key for the user ID superuser. After the management process is complete, you can reapply the previous SSH key.
Note: This documentation is specific to using the Flex System V7000 system with IBM Flex System Manager management software in a Flex System environment.

For more information about working with other storage resources, see Managing external storage resources.

The following table provides links to common Flex System V7000 configuration and management tasks.

Table 1. Flex System V7000 configuration and management tasks
Task Description Action
Setting up and discovering a newly-installed Flex System V7000 with the IBM Flex System Manager management software Discovery and inventory collection for the Flex System V7000 is automatic. If necessary, you can also use the management software command-line interface to manage and configure the Flex System V7000. If an IBM Flex System Manager management node is installed and managing a chassis, and you install a Flex System V7000 in the managed chassis, the management software detects it and uses a default IP address and superuser user ID to establish initial management of the Flex System V7000.
If a Flex System V7000 is not discovered automatically, or if the Flex System V7000 was previously configured in another cluster and the Flex System V7000 was moved from one chassis to another, use the management software web interface and CLI to discover and managed the storage node manually. See Managing a Flex System V7000 manually.
Working with multiple user interfaces You can use the storage-management components of the IBM Flex System Manager management software user interfaces (web interface and command-line interface) to perform some management tasks and monitor storage performance, mappings, and virtualization. For information about the IBM Flex System Manager management software web and CLI, see User interfaces.
Use the Flex System V7000 user interfaces (web interface and command-line interface) to configure your storage, manage Flex System V7000 settings and view system status.

For information about how to launch the Flex System V7000 web interface from the management software web interface, see Viewing and managing a Flex System V7000 storage node.

Viewing and managing the Flex System V7000 in the IBM Flex System Manager web interface
Note: The Flex System V7000 management GUI, which you can launch from the management software web interface, enables you to perform advanced storage configuration and management tasks.
You can use the management software web interface to view Flex System V7000 properties and complete management tasks. See Viewing storage devices.
Use the Chassis Map view in the management software web interface to view Flex System V7000 details and complete management tasks. From the Chassis Manager page, click the chassis that contains the Flex System V7000; then, click the Flex System V7000 system.

The details for the Flex System V7000 are displayed. Click the Actions menu for a list of storage viewing and management options.

Configure an IBM Flex System FC5022 16Gb SAN Switch for management. See Configuring the IBM Flex System FC5022 16Gb SAN Switch.
Configure a Flex System CN4093 10Gb Converged Scalable Switch
Configuring a Storage Area Network (SAN) and zoning Be aware of SAN configuration and zoning rules.
Understand zoning details for hosts and the Flex System V7000.
Learn about typical ways to configure your Flex System V7000 to a Fibre Channel network.
Creating storage system pools A storage system pool enables you to group similar storage subsystems. With VMControl, you can create a storage system pool of selected storage subsystems, add storage to the storage system pool, permanently delete a storage system pool, and edit a storage system pool policy. For an overview of storage system pools, see Storage system pools.

For information about creating and managing storage system pools, see Managing storage system pools.

Creating storage volumes The Create Storage Volume wizard guides you through the steps that are required to create storage volumes, including selecting a storage pool from which the storage volumes are allocated and attached to the selected servers. Prerequisites for using the wizard include configuring hard zoning on each switch, and discovering and collecting inventory for the server and storage device. See Creating storage volumes.
A logical volume is a virtual disk that the management software and Flex System V7000 make available to host systems.
Using Copy Services to copy storage volumes FlashCopy®, Global Mirror, and Metro Mirror are copy-service functions that are provided by the Flex System V7000.
Be aware of the system requirements.
You can establish new Copy Services relationships in a variety of ways.
Monitoring storage events and creating event notifications You can use the IBM Flex System Manager management software web interface to monitor Flex System V7000 events. See Viewing the health and status of storage devices.
You can use the Flex System V7000 command-line interface or management GUI to set event notifications.
Submitting serviceable hardware problems to IBM support Service and Support Manager (a component of IBM Flex System Manager management software) automatically detects serviceable hardware problems and collects supporting data for serviceable hardware problems that occur on a Flex System V7000. The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is integrated with Service and Support Manager and transmits serviceable hardware problems and associated support files to IBM support. See Problem reporting in Service and Support Manager.
Updating the Flex System V7000 You can use the IBM Flex System Manager management software to acquire and install firmware updates for the Flex System V7000. See Acquiring and installing updates.
Virtualizing your storage You can use the IBM Flex System Manager management software in conjunction with the Flex System V7000 to create and manage logical volumes of data.
VMControl is the primary virtual storage-management component of the management software. See Overview of VMControl.

For information about how to use VMControl in the web interface, see Navigating and managing VMControl resources.

VMControl enables you to create and manage storage system pools. See Storage system pools overview and Managing storage system pools.
