Hard disk drive problems

Use this information to resolve hard drive problems.

Note: If the hot-swap SAS drive has failed, but the solid state drives have not, the IBM® Flex System Manager management software image might still be operational.

If the management node fails to recognize the hard disk drive, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that the drive is supported for this compute node.
  2. Make sure that the drive is seated in the drive bay properly and that there is no physical damage to the drive connectors.
  3. Run the DSA SAS Fixed Disk or SAS Attached Disk diagnostic tests (see the IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) website).
    1. If the drive fails the diagnostic test, replace the drive.
    2. If the drive passes the diagnostic tests but is still not recognized, complete the following steps:
      1. Replace the drive.
      2. Replace the hard drive backplane (see Removing the hot-swap storage backplane and Installing the hot-swap storage backplane).
      3. Replace the system board (see Removing the system-board assembly and Installing the system-board assembly).
  4. Complete the procedure described in Reinstalling management software components from optical media after replacing the hard disk drive.
Note: If you have to replace (or have already replaced) a management node solid state drive (SSD), use the reinstallation and recovery process that is described in Reinstalling management software components from optical media after replacing the SSDs and hard disk drive.
