Managing storage using Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) cluster storage subsystems
With VMControl and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) cluster storage subsystems, you can create storage pools that can be used by any VIOS virtual servers connected to the storage pool. You can also add physical volumes to, or delete physical volumes from, edit, and delete the storage pools.
- Shared storage pools
You can create a shared storage pool that can be accessed by VIOS virtual servers on multiple systems. To create this shared storage pool, you group VIOS virtual servers into a VIOS cluster storage subsystem, select a physical volume or cluster repository disk on which to store the metadata about the shared storage pool, and then select physical volumes that make up the shared storage pool. - Requirements for creating and managing shared storage pools
Before you can create and manage a shared storage pool with IBM Flex System Manager 6.3.2 or later, you must ensure that your environment satisfies the following requirements: - Installing the shared storage pool VIOS subagent
The shared storage pool VIOS subagent is a subagent to the IBM Flex System Manager Common Agent that is running on a Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual server. It enhances the IBM Flex System Manager agent to provide an interface for creating and managing shared storage pools. It also provides the interface for the shared storage pools image management capabilities exploited by IBM Flex System Manager VMControl. - Creating a shared storage pool
You use the Create Shared Storage Pool wizard to specify Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual servers and define a storage pool to create a shared storage pool. - Viewing the storage pool dashboard
You can view a summary of the storage pool and its components. - Adding physical volumes to a storage pool
You can add storage to an existing shared storage pool by adding physical volumes to the storage pool that is associated with the shared storage pool. The physical volumes must be accessible to the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual servers that are part of the shared storage pool. - Replacing physical volumes in a shared storage pool
You can replace physical volumes in an existing shared storage pool by removing any number of physical volumes from the storage pool and adding any number of physical volumes whose combined capacity is equal to or greater than the combined capacity of the physical volumes that are removed. - Editing a storage pool threshold
When the amount of storage that is available drops below a certain percentage of the total storage in the storage pool, a warning is displayed. This percentage is called the storage pool threshold. You can specify this percentage for your environment. - Adding VIOS virtual servers to a shared storage pool
You can add Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual servers to an existing shared storage pool. - Removing VIOS virtual servers from a shared storage pool
You can remove Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual servers from a shared storage pool. - Deleting a shared storage pool
You can permanently delete a shared storage pool. - Removing the shared storage pool VIOS subagent
You can remove the shared storage pool VIOS subagent from your system with the updateios command.
