The USB 3.0 port on the front of the box can not be used to install some OSs, in particular, the Windows OSs, as the driver is not native to this OS and will require a device driver to work. Other OSs, such as Linux should be ok.
Verify OS supports USB 3.0. Check with your OS provider to insure installs are supported through USB 3.0.
